A busy start to the month

This week, Sprouting Hope has a busy schedule planned, we hope you can join us at one or more of these events.

Tonight, Wed Oct 2, we will be hosting an open day at the garden from 5-7pm - come out to meet some of the people who make Sprouting Hope happen and learn more about what we're doing and how we do it.

Then on Thursday night, from 5-9pm, Harvest Table Restaurant in Meadowview will be hosting a community fundraiser for the garden, a portion of the restaurant's proceeds for the night will be donated to Sprouting Hope. Come down and enjoy a locally grown and produced meal and support the garden at the same time.

On Friday morning, we'll have our normal Friday morning garden work session 9-11am.

Saturday is a big end to the week, with the start of the harvest celebrations at the Marion farmers market. Sprouting Hope will have a table at the market every Saturday in October 8am-noon, offering free food from our garden, and a place for others to trade or donate any excess produce from their own gardens. This Saturday after the market, we'll be back out at the garden for a community work day to clean up and prepare the garden for the coming winter from 1-5pm.

We hope to see you at one or more of these events this week (and during the rest of October).

May Madness!

May is a busy month for Sprouting Hope. Tomorrow May 4 is a workday at the garden, 9am 'till noon, we'll also be working Thursday evenings 5-7 all month (and if you can't make it at 5, feel free to come out a little later). We're also having our Mondays in May fundraising dinners at Handsome Molly's Bistro at 118 E Main St, Marion. Garden volunteers (and a few special guests) will be serving and washing the dishes and 15% of all sales, plus 100% of all tips will be donated to the garden every Monday evening, 4-9pm. Dine-in, take-out or come and buy some local art, a bottle of wine or just a cup of coffee - every bit helps. We will also have a table at the Smyth County Volunteer Fair on May 11 - a great opportunity to find out more about ways you can help out in the community.

Newsworthy!

Sprouting Hope was on the front page of the Smyth County News on Wednesday, April 17.

There are so many ways that you can get involved with feeding people in need right here in Smyth County:
  • Participate in the community work day tomorrow - April 20, 9 am - noon
  • Have a meal at Handsome Molly's Bistro during our Monday's in May fundraiser. Every Monday evening in May from 4-9pm, 15% of all sales will be donated to Sprouting Hope. Garden volunteers will be serving tables so all tips will also be donated to this great cause. May 6, May 13, May 20 and May 27.
  • Come out to the weekly garden work sessions throughout the summer. Dates and times will be announced on our website and Facebook page soon!
  • Get involved in the planning of the garden or the business side of running a non-profit organization. We need board members, fundraisers, teachers, and more. Some folks might want to be involved year-round while others might want to work on a single project. If you want to help, we'd love to talk with you about how your skills and available time can be put to use!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: Take Hwy 16 (Park Blvd) north out of Marion for 4 miles. Turn right into Hungry Mother State Park and continue for 1 mile on East Hungry Mother Drive. Turn left into the Hungry Mother Lutheran Retreat Center. Turn right immediately and park along the row of pine trees running beside the main road.

First garden work day is April 6 (tomorrow)!

It's finally time to kick off the 2013 season in the Sprouting Hope Community Garden! Everyone is invited to come out and help get ready for spring.

Our major tasks will be getting the electric tape fence tightened up, installing a new round of wire fencing to keep out the bunnies that outsmarted the electric fence, repairing a damaged water valve and testing the irrigation system, weeding and preparing beds, maybe some mulching depending on what we find out there, and planting onions, peas and mixed greens (yay!).

There will be something for people of all ages to do so bring friends, gloves, hand tools, drinks and join us for what should be a gorgeous morning with great company in service of our community. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!
